Nominated: Alton B Parker, of New York for President.
Nominated: Henry G Davis for Vice President.
Many at the convention felt the time had come to drop its support for free silver and return to the support of Gold. The discovery of significant deposits of gold had eliminated the need to change the gold standard. Bryan was extremely vocal opposing any modification of the current Democratic platform. Bryan failed to effect the platform on currency. His hand could be seen in a number of other areas where the platform called for Philippine independence and direct elections. Bryan attempted to block the nomination of Alton Parker, who was the candidate of New York's Tammany Hall. Despite his opposition Parker was nominated on the first ballot.
