| During World War ll, General Omar Bradley commanded troops in North Africa and led the invasion of Sicily (1943). He also led the lst Army in the Normandy invasion (1944). Bradley served as Army Chief of Staff (1948-49), and was the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (1949-53). He retired in 1953.
