Hungarian statesman Imre Nagy was born in Kaposvar, Hungary. He was captured by the Russians during World War I. After the Russian Revolution he joined the Communist Party. He returned briefly to Hungary but fled back to the Soviet Union, where he remained until the end of World War II. Nagy was first an Agricultural Minister and then Prime Minister. When he began criticizing the Soviets, he was ousted but returned to power as Premier after the Hungarian uprising of 1956. When the Soviets invaded Hungary , he was shot.
