British statesman Harold Macmillan was educated at Oxford. He served in World War I and was wounded three times. Macmillan entered politics as a member of the Conservative Party and in 1924 he was elected to Parliament. Macmillan established a reputation as a progressive within the Conservative Party. In 1940, he joined the cabinet of Churchill. Over a decade later, Macmillan was named Minister of Housing. After the Suez Crisis of 1956, Macmillan replaced Anthony Eden as Prime Minister. One of his most important accomplishments at that time was the re-establishment of a close relationship with the United States after the strains associated with the Suez Crisis.
